Need a hand with Macro Bee? This page covers the most common questions and how to reach us. Macro Bee is a companion app for macro-photography focus stacking — it drives a motorized macro rail over Bluetooth, suggests step size and depth of field from your lens and camera, runs automated stacks, and logs each shot so you can match frames to a run.
Macro Bee is an independent product. It is designed to work with the WeMacro rail and compatible motorized macro rails, but it is not affiliated with, authorized, endorsed by, or sponsored by WeMacro or the manufacturer of any rail. References to “WeMacro” describe hardware compatibility only.
Get in touch
The fastest way to get help is by email. Write to Jed Ashford at jedashford+macrobee@gmail.com and include:
- your platform (macOS, Windows, Android, or the web app);
- your rail model and how you connect to it (Bluetooth);
- a short description of what you expected, what happened, and any steps to reproduce it.
We read every message and aim to reply within a few business days. We're a small operation, so detail up front helps us help you faster.
Connecting your rail over Bluetooth
Macro Beetalks to your rail over Bluetooth. If your rail won't connect:
- Make sure the rail is powered on and within range, and that Bluetooth is enabled on your computer or device.
- On Android, the operating system may ask for Bluetooth and/or location permissions in order to scan for nearby devices.Macro Bee only uses these to find your rail — it does not collect or transmit your location.
- On the web, Bluetooth control requires a browser that supports Web Bluetooth (for example, recent Chrome or Edge on a desktop). Some browsers and platforms do not support it.
- If a connection drops mid-run, stop the rail, reconnect, and confirm your hardware travel limits before continuing.
Focus-stacking basics
Macro Bee computes suggested step size, shot count, and depth of field from the lens and camera settings you enter. These values are estimates to assist you — always verify them for your own setup before and during a run, and supervise an active run so you can stop the rail if needed.
- Enter your lens magnification, aperture, and sensor format so the suggested step size matches your optics.
- Set sensible travel limits on your hardware before starting an automated stack.
- Each run records shot timestamps and rail positions so you can match the files on your camera's SD card to the run afterward, then feed them into your stacking software (such as Helicon Focus or Zerene Stacker). Your photos stay on your camera — Macro Bee never receives or uploads your images.
- You can export a run's data as CSV from the app to keep your own records.
Accounts and your data
You can use Macro Bee in a local demo mode without an account. An account is only needed to sync your saved projects (stacking recipes) and run history across devices.
